MUMBAI: Several students who asked the Maharashtra State Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education to verify their HSC marks have complained that the process is being carried out in an "erratic and arbitrary manner".
Madhuri Sharma, a parent who went to the board office on Wednesday, said she was shocked to see that nearly 300 students who had applied for their French and German marks to be verified got massive increases in just three hours.
Her daughter had scored a dismal 64 per cent in French. However, when her turn came, an official announced that no more changes would be made. "How could they turn me away without looking at my daughter''s marksheet or paper?" Ms Sharma asked angrily.
The revised marksheets for students who applied for verification in the two languages shows a big jump in marks. A student of D.G. Ruparel College, who had scored 57 per cent in French got 92 per cent after verification.
Another student''s French marks jumped up from 62 per cent to 96 per cent. "If there are such gross mistakes then we demand to see the answer papers,"Ms Sharma added.
Many students opt for these languages because they are seen as highscoring subjects. However, when they received their HSC marksheets, they that most of the scores were in the 60s.
HSC board chairperson J.M. Abhyankar conceded that the maximum number of verification applications were received for the French and German exams.
He maintained the verifications were being carried out systematically and refused to comment on the nature of errors in the evaluation of the language papers.
